Firefighters put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. However, the nature of their work exposes them to unique occupational hazards, significantly increasing their risk of developing cancer. Recognizing the urgent need for specialized support, the Direct Connect program offers streamlined access to world-class cancer care for firefighters and their families. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and firefighters across the region are united in the fight against cancer.
Connecting Firefighters to Comprehensive Cancer Care
Dana-Farber is committed to addressing the unique healthcare needs of firefighters and dedicated to preventing cancer and detecting the disease in its earliest forms. Exposure to smoke and hazardous chemicals contribute to firefighters’ increased cancer risk. Our Direct Connect team is committed to providing our firefighter community with the care and support they deserve.
Through the Direct Connect program, firefighters and their families will be able to access the full range of oncology services:
- Comprehensive navigation team, to provide fast answers to questions and direct access to oncology care services
- Cancer early detection, interception, and genetic services
- Supportive care services, including symptom management support, integrative therapies (such as massage and acupuncture), and psychosocial support to cope with the emotional stress of a cancer diagnosis
- Online second opinions and access for individuals outside of Boston, including individuals who live internationally
- On-site oncology services, including access to the latest therapies, clinical services, and innovative clinical trials
