Integrative therapies can help children, teens, and their families experience greater well-being and calm as they cope with the side effects and stress of cancer treatment.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years and is now widely accepted in Western culture as a complementary treatment for various illnesses, including cancer.
At the Zakim Center, acupuncture is available for patients aged 8 and up, offering a calming and invigorating experience that helps ease the symptoms and side effects associated with cancer.
This therapy involves gently inserting hair-thin needles into the skin at specific points — called acupoints — which can be stimulated to rebalance physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional energy. For younger patients who may feel nervous about needles, we provide a comforting environment with skilled practitioners who ensure a gentle and supportive experience.
Kids Kicking Cancer and Heroes Circle
In partnership with Kids Kicking Cancer, the Zakim Center brings martial arts to patients during infusion treatments. This evidence-based, innovative program merges modern integrative medicine with traditional martial arts.
The program's Heroes Circle initiative addresses the overwhelming needs of children with illness. Specially trained black belt martial artists teach breathing, visualization, and relaxation techniques – in addition to traditional martial arts moves – to help empower children and provide them with a sense of power, peace, and purpose.
Massage Therapy
Massage therapy involves therapeutic touch and various stroke styles to support the muscles and soft tissues of the body. Oncology massage is specifically tailored to provide pediatric patients who have a cancer diagnosis with a safe and beneficial experience. Research and clinical experience show that it can alleviate symptoms such as pain, anxiety and depression, fatigue, insomnia, and nausea.
At the Zakim Center, oncology massage is available for patients aged 5 and up, and it can be used before, during, and after cancer treatment.
Our massage therapists are specialists in oncology who have completed additional training beyond their traditional massage therapy education. For younger patients, we ensure a gentle and comforting environment, helping ease any apprehension they may have.
